ABOUT
AIKIDO
Aikido forms part
of the of the conventional family of Japanese martial arts. It's techniques
evolved from the spear (so-jitsu/Yari), sword (ken-jitsu/katana), and
Daito ryu Jujitsu. Even though modern aikido resembles the forms of its
ancient past, a quantum leap in attitude and development sets it apart
from other sport, ordinary fighting and popular martial arts.
The essence
of aikido
Ai - harmony
Ki - Energy
Do - the way
Aikido is
a timeless art with values that are in keeping with modern living. Besides
being a functional self-defence system, it is also an effective way to
stay supple, fit and healthy. It is practiced by men and women of all
ages. It follows in the moral tradition of Bushido, which can be associated
with the samurai of old Japan. It teaches that a true warrior should live
the virtues of Loyalty, Valour and Honour. It emphasises self-development
and supports Justice, Courage, Benevolence, Truthfulness, Duty, Politeness
and Self-control, the corner stones of any society. Aikido is not a religion,
however it is a way of life that spontaneously coexists with nature and
echoes the teachings of all major world religions.
Aikido was
originated by Morihei Ueshiba (1883 - 1969), around 1925 after many years
of research, practice and development. He is respectfully referred to
as O' Sensei of Keiso.
