TRAINING INFO Times
and location It is traditional to bow (rei) before stepping onto the tatami. This is to demonstrate respect for the training area by humbling yourself. There is no place for ego or aggression in the dojo. (This philosophy should exist outside the dojo walls as well). Before the class begins students are welcome to stretch or practice, however ensure that the mat (tatami) is swept before hand. Before the instructor steps onto the mat, the senior students will initiate the class to line up. Use this opportunity to relax and clear your head. It is bad etiquette for the sensei to wait for the class to line up. Traditionally the sensei will sit in front of the class, opposite the kamiza (picture of the founder) and will bow – the class will follow. The reason behind this is to show our respect and acknowledgement for his teaching. There is no secret mystic reasoning behind this. After this, the sensei will turn and face the class, where the students and sensei will exchange bows. Again, this is to illustrate respect for one another. Depending on the sensei, a series of stretches are performed. Take these seriously as it will prevent injury and make your movements more fluid. Many of the movements that are practiced may seem to have neither relevance nor practical value – however these exercises are designed to create awareness and control as well as an understanding of finer aspects of a complete technique.
